We spent a couple of terrific days in La Coruna as we waited for the front to pass. The Marina La Coruna is right next to the old Spanish fortress and a short walk into town. The marina staff could not do enough to help us and it would have been nice to have stayed longer. The front had passed but it was still forcast as a 5 metre swell. Despite this we left the harbour on the morning of the 22nd of April with a degree of trepidation.
The swell was manageable and the winds were around 18 knots but slowly rising. We were making good progress until late in the day [in 24 knot winds] I noticed that the bolt holding the boom to the mast was loose and the nut gone. Keith and I tried for a while to realign the bolt but it was impossible given the conditions. We made the decision that despite being miles from the coast we should head for Portugal to see if we could repair it.
Around 7pm on the same day we pulled in to Castelo de Santiago, close to the border with Spain.
