We have been in English Harbour, Antigua now for a
couple of days and are looking at moving on in the near future. We have finally
been able to track down the company that can replace the thermostat on the
freezer unit but at best that will be tomorrow.
Daniel and I sampled a few "Mount Gay" rums last
night so I woke a little fuzzy. A litre bottle of this delightful brew cost us
the equivalent of $13 Australian. Could be habit forming with the rum this
cheap!!
The locals are laid back, freindly and
helpful. It has been pretty much what I thought the Caribbean would be.
We have been swimming several times a day to keep
cool and went snorkelling around the reef 100 metres from our boat. There was an
amazing amount and variety of tropical fish on the reef. We have been told that
if you snorkel there closer to dusk you will start to see the sharks emerging
from the deeper water. Maybe next time!!
Tonight we are heading to the top of the hill that
overlooks both of the harbours where every Sunday night there is a gathering
with local music, food and of course rum. I believe they play the tin drums
while the sun sets over the ocean. We are looking forward to it.
As soon as we can we will head to Jolley Harbour
for a couple of days in the marina to complete the repairs to the main halyard
and now also the geneker halyard.
After we leave Antigua we are going to work our way
across to Aruba, then on to Panama, before tackling the Pacific crossing to the
Galapagos Islands and then French Polynesia.
There will be a great deal to report over
the next few days so I will probably only write the blog every couple of days
unless we come across something particularly interesting. Until then we will see
if we can drink the island dry of rum and swim lots.
