A much better day today after another night of no
wind. Even the westerly wind deserted us late yesterday and by early evening we
were down to virtually no wind at all. We motored right through the night on
another flat calm sea. It was overcast and cool so we didn't even bother going
up to the helmstation other than the check every now and then. I fell into a
coma at 5am when Rob took over and woke to the sound of him hoisting the
genneker at around 7am. The wind had finally swung to the south and was blowing
at 12 knots. Under mainsail and genneker we took off [at last!!] at a boat speed
of 7-8 knots. Throughout the day the wind has continued but there has
been periods of lighter wind at about 6 knots and fairly frequent periods
of 10-11 knots, when the boat comes to life. Bit of swell up today for the first
time in what seems ages.
It is 1pm right now and we are just sailing past
Matthew Island some 22NM to our south. Very high island and I was not expecting
that we would be able to see it as we passed. Once again I'm not sure if Matthew
and Hunter Islands are inhabited. Ceva-i Ra was much lower and similar
looking at a distance to the islands of the Tuamotus in French
Polynesia.
Had a haircut yesterday. Maybe not the neatest one
I have ever had but Rob only had some cheap scissors I bought in La Rochelle. It
felt a bit like he was using the fishing pliers but they got the job done
and he has me looking [relatively] sharp.
We are currently 234NM from Noumea and finally feel
that we are making some headway. Maybe we will get there after all.
Gerard is booked and will arrive in Noumea on
Monday and Rob will fly out next Wednesday.
