Yesterday was one of the most varied and
interesting we have seen.
The morning was beautiful with only around 3-4
knots of wind and full sunshine. We motored for most of the morning but around
11AM we stopped the motors in a total calm. There was not even a breath of wind,
virtually no swell and clear blue skies. Boat speed zero, wind speed
zero. It was just stunning and what struck me the most was the
complete lack of any noise. It was as though you could have had a conversation
with someone a mile away and not had to yell. All of us, including Lyn,
went for a swim in the Atlantic with the nearest land some 200NM away. She was
very tentative but this was more about concerns with the swim ladder than the
ocean itself. Once she was in the water she had a ball and made it out
again with no worries. I launched into a couple of "Bommies" off
the stern. My last one was scored as a "10" because it wet the deck,
including Daniel's bedding. Did I mention he has been banished to the
deck since his refusal to sign the Docker's membership
form??
After the swim we cranked up the motors again and
pushed on at around 5-6 knots. I have to say that it feels like cheating to
have come all this way and be running the motors in the final run
home.
Overnight we did pick up a tailwind for some time
which did allow us to sail but for the most part it was calm. Another
beautiful night and with the moon coming out very late mean't we could
enjoy the millions of stars that were out.
Around 5AM we came through a huge band of
torrential rain. Not much wind but the boat had a good wash to help remove some
of the salt.
Right now the sun is coming out. We have a tailwind
at a pathetic 4 knots and hoping things improve as the day
passes.
Over the 24 hours we made around 130NM but 99
percent of this was motoring. We are 148 NM from Antigua but it feels
further.
Andrew.
