59 56:10N 29 55:19E The Catherine’s Palace in Pushkin, a suburb of St Petersburgh and the Peterhof Palace on the coast just West of St Petersburgh were turned into country residence first by Peter the Great, then given to his daughter, Catherine who turned them into Baroque and Classical masterpieces between 1744 and 1756. They were bombed by the Germans during the second World war, and both have been restored to their original splendour during the period of the Soviet Revolution. The grand cascade has 3 tiers, and is even more sumptuous than Versailles! The golden and red leaves of autumn were just a delight to behold in the perfectly sunny day we had for touring the gardens. |
