Tuesday 26th October 2010 towards Talang Island

0655hrs left at first night after a surprisingly comfortable night, anchored in the middle of the shallow, but wide river estuary, despite being surrounded by fishing boats going in and out of the river.

Lovely day passing the islands of Pangkor carried a fair tide the whole way and romped along at 8 knots plus.

1240 hours anchored between the mainland and the island at dead low water.  A really great day didn't do any jobs today other than polish the transom. A nice swim but very strong tide.

Position: 4:25'.19 N 100:94'71 E

Distance run 41 miles average speed 7.1 knots

                    PA260142 Mineral extraction at Talang.JPG

Mineral extraction mine and factory right on the water’s edge opposite the island we anchored behind.  Water still very muddy, goodness knows what horrid chemicals are in it?

Great anchorage, had a swim anyway, such lovely weather at last!

PA260156 rubbish ashore at Talang.JPG

Dinghied over to the small island, nothing but rubbish and sacs full of plastic bottles?

Fishermen seemed to have used it as a temporary refuge, with abandoned mattresses, endless pieces of wood and rope, and bits of rope and fishing line everywhere.  Regardless of all this, there was a dog roaming around, plus two nests attended by a pair of whistling kites and another by a pair of sea-eagles, let’s hope the fish are not too poisoned by that mineral extraction factory!
