Babi, Nr Nongsa, opposite Singapore
Thursday 14th October
Captain’s Log:
Thursday 14th October 2010 Towards Nongsa Point Marina
0705hrs Left anchorage after a very quiet night and a great
sleep. A very easy run today and enough wind to sail a lot of the way. Damn
generator would not start though - without jumping the batteries. I will
have to buy new batteries for both the generator and engine start as they are
pretty stuffed! I was beginning to wonder if our AIS had stopped working as
since Bali we have passed a lot of ships and not received a signal. Today
there were ships popping up everywhere. I can only think that they must turn
their AIS off so as not to attract pirates- am getting a lot of warnings
about them on the Sat C both in the Singapore Straits and the Malacca
Straits!! Have to watch out - made up a dummy wallet with old CCs and some
money - just in case!
1530hrs Anchored off Nongsa Point, just behind a couple
of jetties at a small town called Baabi. Decided not to go into the marina
as we are already checked out of the country and do not want to cause any
problems! Big day tomorrow crossing the Singapore Straits, and leaving
Indonesia.
Position: 01:11'.73n 104:06'.66e
Distance run: 64.2 miles average speed 7.55 knots
Three ships like this one are anchored
in the narrow passage between Bintam and Batam, the barges unloading iron ore
taken off the hillside of the island close to Bintam
The island below on the RHS are still
not too industrialised, but the top of the chart is the Singapore Straits,
where we shall be crossing tomorrow.
A tiny section of rainforest left
before it gets stripped away for the iron ore, which clearly it has judging
by the red cliff face
This is the Industrial town on Batam,
just round the corner to the picture before this one
David dipped our ensign to this
Indonesian Frigate as we passed. Hopefully he’s there to repel
pirates?
This odd shaped vessel is a ferry ro ro
for containers
In amongst this lot, right along the
narrow channel we were taking with ferries etc. Are these people fishing,
they are lucky they are seen and not run down!
We anchored close to the jetties of the
town of Babi, just in front of Nongsa Point where a lot of people go into the
Marina to check out of Indonesia. But we had no need to do that, having
checked out of Kumai already.
Babi is another village involved in
iron ore digging it seems
And these are the executives homes
close by, they have a nice view of us anchored opposite!
