During the long, rainy afternoon Ken, Ken and Mark successfully installed a new VHF radio as the old one had developed a fault on the microphone. This involved painstaking work of removing a close fitting panel from the saloon storage unit, in which the old radio was fitted. A precarious balancing act ensued in less than calm seas whilst they re-positioned and re-fitted the supporting bracket for the new radio, and also secured the stereo player that was underneath. Without dropping any screws, nuts, connectors etc. which could have been lost forever to the bilges. Not satisfied with their endeavours, they then went up on the deck to investigate the electric anchor windlass switch in what had become quite heavy rain. Needless to say, sundowners were drunk inside, the gloom really descending. In keeping with the British weather, dinner was two Fray Bentos pies, steak and ale and chicken and mushroom (thank you, Lorna), peas and potatoes which were thoroughly enjoyed.

A quiet night, with the exception of the AIS deciding to play up, and eventaully stopped working. This prevents us seeing ships that transmit a signal which we pick up on our chart plotter. Tightening the cables this morning appeared to sort it, but then it went off again later so Mark and Ken had the panel off again to re-check the cables. Heavy clouds and rising wind demanded that two reefs were put into the mainsail just before lunch; really heavy rain and poor visibility made lunchtime an inside event again and we reflected on the reports received yesterday of Wimbledon, Andy Murray playing to victory in beautiful, hot, sunny weather; maybe we are going in the right direction after all.... 1177 miles done, 522 to go...
