Rhapsode

Bread making day yesterday. Michaela took six pictures of the finished product which must say a lot about the normal standard of cuisine on board! Anyway, we had a nice picnic lunch with all the ingredients spread out on the cockpit floor (on a non slip mat) so that they wouldn’t roll away before we got to taste them.

We broke the spell today (I think). For the past three days we have been going slower and slower and so each noon when I work out our speed, etc. the answer to the ETA question has always been ‘ten days’. We were beginning to think that we were stuck in some kind of time warp where we would always be ten days from our destination no matter how fast the boat sailed. But today we finally got ourselves embedded in the North Brazilian current which is hurtling us westward at the breakneck speed of about 1 knot. So when we will arrive? – Probably in about ten days.

Last night we received a deputation of sea birds. They perched on the mizzen boom, on the life buoys and on the MOB sling. One attempted a fly-in to the cockpit. Visions of a watery version of Hitchcock’s ‘Birds’ came to mind. Especially since their call was almost primaeval. Those of the crew with a more excitable imagination (well, alright, I admit it, me!) could hear pterodactyls hunting for supper!
