Rhapsode

The sea life special of yesterday continued into the evening. We had
another dolphin show at sunset. A wonderful sight to see them jumping and
playing as they were silhouetted in the setting sun. As they were racing away
after their display two of the more exuberant ones jumped a good eight feet or
so straight up as if in a goodbye salute. A small white bird sat on the bow
pulpit watching the show along with us. After the dolphins had gone their way we
sat out on deck until it was quite dark and all the stars were out.
Liz and Michael later had another bioluminescence show. After watching it
from the back deck for a while they drew some sea water into the basin and
watched that sparkle. Great fun.
Then on my morning watch around four o’clock I heard dolphins blowing very
close to the boat but it was too dark to see anything.
All told, quite a remarkable day for sea life.
Today is quite different. We’re in shallow water and it’s a muddy green
colour not the sparkling blue of the deep ocean. We’re only 30 miles off the
coast and have 90 miles left to go. Our current disappeared again yesterday
afternoon but it’s back with us this morning so we’re speeding along at 5.5
knots but still under power. The wind has been south and east and everywhere in
between but never much more than a few knots. Certainly not enough to sail in.
All being well we’ll get in tomorrow morning sometime. For the moment I’m not
sure where ‘in’ is. Could be the Iles de Salut or could be Kourou depending on
which place has the more accessible water supply.
I was wrong – today is not so different – we’ve just past a giant turtle!
The sea life bonanza is still with us.
