Last day in Mindelo

Rhapsode

The boys are asleep. Well, they would be, wouldn't
they, after a night on the grog and getting back to the boat an hour or so
before dawn? I wonder whether the washing will get done or the empty gas
cylinders exchanged for freshly filled ones?
Wakey wakey!
Yesterday was a quiet day for us. Our ferry from
Santo Antao got us back to Mindelo at about 11:00. We went directly to the port
police and immigration to check out of the island. The immigration police really
have a good sense of humour - they keep all the boats' crew lists in a file
marked 'The Simpsons' complete with a picture of Homer and Marge on the front
cover.
Lunch with other boaties at a little cafe in one of
the veggie markets. Dish of the day - beans and maize with something or other.
The dish of the day - breakfast lunch and dinner always seems to be maize and
beans with something. There is a heavy variety called catchupa and a complete
range of meals of varying degrees of heaviness down to a light salad of maize
and beans.
It is a windy town and not all of it is down to the
trade winds.
Then a walk round a market to buy some wicker work
woven pictures, an ice cream stop and then back to the boat. A radio check with
another boat didn't yield good results so we are going to repeat the exercise
this morning. That should get the boys out of bed - DALLIANCE, DALLIANCE,
DALLIANCE. THIS IS RHAPSODE RHAPSODE RHAPSODE OVER and so on. Perhaps the
washing will get done after all.
Today we have to stock up on veggies and fruit,
fill the boat's tanks with fresh water and fill the other tanks with
diesel. Then a night sail to Sao Nicolau. I don't like arriving at new and
possibly not well charted anchorages in the dark so our late afternoon
departure is designed to get us to our destination after sunrise. It's
about 60 miles away.
Perhaps I should let the boys sleep in the hope
that they will do the night watches between them??
Keep hoping!
