Mon 13- Sat 18 November, 2023 Las Palmas
The first week was tiring, particularly after our intensive preparations in Pasito Blanco, but things are going well. We have not sorted out our provisioning plan yet, and there are a million jobs to see to, but all in all we are on track.
Monday, Ray calls in and we go to a sextant set-up masterclass, run by a fellow Stokey, called "Stokey Woodall". Tony returns to Niord, and receives notification that the sat comms have been turned back on ready for our voyage. He glances into the bilges for a quick check, and his heart sinks. They are full of water. A quick check reveals that it is fresh water, not salt. Another check and our water tank is empty! Niord has delivered us another curved ball!! We are both in shock. We start hunting for the problem. We fill the tank a quarter full, seems OK. Then half, then three quarters, then full. Things are not OK, as the bilge starts filling with water again. Tony checks the hot water tank, the accumulator, the pipework. All OK. After much searching, the leak is discovered forward of the mast at the base of the tank on the port side. It is completely inaccessible, and a steady stream is pouring out. We are disconsolate, and discuss the options. A visit to the ARC office sees us discussing what steps we have to take if we need to withdraw. Next, we arrange an appointment at the local yard, Rolnautic, and discuss the options. Yes, they can fit us a nice new stainless steel tank after ripping up the cabin sole, but no, unsurprisingly, not in time to see us start the ARC. We decide to go on, and in the midst of the chaos find the time to do our first shop at Hiperdino. We think of a solution to our problems. In the evening we need a drink, and go to Pier19 for a meal with Peter and Colleen from Homecoming.
Tuesday sees Tony in the Rolnautic chandlery buying the bits to install a 150L flexible tank beneath the cabin sole in the void forward of the mast. He spends the day plumbing it in. Tony squeezes in an emergency comms seminar. Ray says goodbye to Ali and joins us in the afternoon. Ruben, the Honda engineer arrives to take our outboard for checks. Carlos installs our new i60 wind instrument. In the middle of this chaos the Hiperdino delivery arrives, and is left in the cockpit overnight!
Wednesday Raymarine arrives to discuss our AIS data issues, and they upgrade our plotter software at the same time. Karen stows the Hiperdino shop. She gets our YB tracker, and Tony fits it. We go to the Saint Lucia presentation to see what awaits us when we arrive!
Ray gets cracking on the jobs list, including emptying the starboard cockpit locker to fit some bungs. We have a major restowage of lines to allow us to stow extra bottled water in here! Ruben returns our outboard, and we go to the costume party in the evening. We follow a crew of Ninja Turtles to the venue (the theme is superheroes), and can't help but laugh when one of them walks into a lamp post because he can't see due to his costume! We go as ourselves as we figure we're superheroes with what we are coping with at present!
It has been playing on Tony's mind that the extra tank he installed will not see us across the Atlantic. On Thursday he buys a couple of extra flexible tanks with the fittings from Rolnautic, and starts putting one together.  We check out at immigration. Jamie arrives, and we meet for a beer in the Sailors Bar. Everything steps up a gear with Jamie here. Our drinks delivery arrives late in the evening, including 15 cases of bottled water! It makes us late for a drinks reception!
Friday, Tony has a trip up the mast to check out the rig, while Jamie does a deck-level check. The starboard cockpit locker is emptied out for the nth time so that Tony can do a steering check. He then does our official ARC checkout. Next is a sat comms check.
During all the chaos Karen has amazingly done the provisioning for our trip entirely alone. This is our fruit and veg delivery which arrives late Friday, following the pattern of the last few days. Everything has to be washed before it can come aboard, as we don't want any stow aways!
We go to the Real Club Nautico for our farewell drinks.
Saturday, the day before we leave, is even more of a whirlwind. Karen stows the fruit and veg in nets made by the boys. They test our downwind twin headsail rig. After much discussion, the second flexible tank is installed on the sole in the aft cabin. Tony and Ray go to the skippers briefing, and have even more information overload! Tony does the last software downloads, so that we can pick up the weather information at sea. Back onboard he changes the water filters, and the flexible tanks are filled. Jamie tapes and replaces some split rings. Tony has a last visit to Rolnautic for gas and batteries while Karen cooks all day in the heat! A last visit to El Corte Ingles for a sack truck and printer. No luck with the printer, it is out of stock! Our starboard furler winch is serviced and our ARC number fitted. The last weather data is loaded. At the end of an exhausting day a last check reveals leaks in our new plumbing system! This is too much to take. Everything has to come apart and be redone. We miss the last sundowner as a result, and exhausted have a late dinner at Barracuda. We have completed the circle, as it was here that we ate on our very first night in Las Palmas a lifetime ago!
