Bernie’s Blog - Day 11 – Wednesday 1 June 2011 White rabbits. What a difference a day makes; overnight and today lovely weather, a gentle south easterly breeze over a moderate sea and we are sailing well. Overnight we had a clear starlit sky above; and luminescences in the boat’s wake. The cooler night temperature (sea is now down to 25° c has meant that we are now using a layer of clothing over our t-shirts and shorts. The asymmetric genoa will go up after lunch of coleslaw and cold meats and cheese. Could not be better We have just given our floating home a good clean inside and she sparkles. The fridge door knob and lock broke but Peter (Skipper) came up with a cunning ‘fix’ which has means that all is back to normal. An unworkable fridge would have not been good for our arrival beers and Bloody Mary’s in a week’s time. We are now making ice for the first time. Last evening’s supper was simple and perfect – pasta and pesto sauce. Well done Colin. We still have 3 ‘in date’ packs of bacon brought from UK by Rod and Bernie so it was bacon sarnies for breakfast this morning. To indicate our isolation we have only seen 6 merchant ships and one yacht in 11 days at sea. We expect this to change in then next few days when yachts sailing from Bermuda, 1000 miles to the west, converge with us as we near the Azores. Our skipper has launched a £10 sweepstake for time of arrival at Horta. Earliest was the skipper (P1) – 2359 on Tuesday 7th June; and latest was me (Bernie) 2345 on Thursday 9th. Watch this space although we do believe the actual time is in the hands of our skipper !! That’s all for today from Republica Susan Ayu. ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// |
