Luna Rosa
Yacht's names are fascinating, they can tell you so much
about their owners before you even get to meet them. Then you often realize that
the skipper bought the yacht already names and therefore it belongs to the
boat's history. Once a yacht get's names it starts building a unique character.
As it is, superstition decrees that it's bad luck to change a yacht's name so
most new owners don't do it unless the original name is either too tacky or
too personal.
A few yacht's I've crossed paths with were called Luna
Rosa - Italian for red moon. I've even raced aboard a yacht with this name in
Turkey but never had a chance to ask the owner about the story behind it's name.
I grew up believing that the moon is white and the sun yellow. But last night I
saw an almost full moon turn to a deep red as it slipped below the Atlantic
horizon. What a sight! This moonset burned itself into my consciousness and
filled me with emotions. And again you get the feeling of insignificance
and smallness when compared with the wonder and beauty of nature.
Once the red moon had set the sky darkened and billions
of stars filled the sky. I took a chart and tried to figure out their names and
place in mythology. I was watching out for a falling star but it was not my
lucky night, perhaps tomorrow I'll get to make a wish. I did see a ship sailing
in the opposite direction, followed by another, so we are not all that alone on
this vast ocen. All of a sudden there was so much action on the big
pond.
it has been a quiet day, one reserved for reading and
talking. Yaeli finished her last 'Bounty' and we're only halfway through the
voyage, what will she do? We still have fresh fruits for breakfast and salad
vegetables for lunch, each evening me manage a cooked meal without and repeats
in the menu, yet. We have had the engine on for twenty-four hours and kept up
with our target speed of five knots average. We know there is a lot of wild
weather, big winds and high waves ahead of us and will try to avoid the worst of
it by sailing east until the weekend.
