Green Turtle Cay, Abacos

We just spent a day at Green Turtle Cay, our first
landfall in the Abacos, getting adjusted to 'island time'. Tom either
borrowed or rented a golf cart (he wouldn't say which) and showed us around. I
think we have been introduced to about half the island's population.
We are thoroughly caught up on the local gossip - Kevin
is signing at a wedding tonight, the girl in the post office is on some kind of
leave after she was found mixing up the office's cash with her own. Lots of GTC
residents are shopping at Maxwells in Marsh Harbor and bringing the goods back
on their own boats, which is hurting the retailers in New Plymouth. The Junkanoo
carnival has been moved to December 31st because new Years Day falls on a Sunday
and street parties don't mix with church duties. Get the picture? The islanders
are very friendly and the main settlement, New Plymouth, is an attractive little
town.
We walked the length of Gillams Beach and dropped
in for lunch at the Green Turtle Club, where they were getting ready for
a wedding this evening. A second wedding celebration is being held
at the Jolly Roger restaurant across the bay. Both in town and out along
the beaches there is a lot of evidence of the damage caused by hurricane Irene.
For Sale signs dot the sandy lanes. In general, the economic situation doesn't
look good. Yesterday I had a haircut and the barber told me he was having his
worst year since opening shop twenty two years ago. Tomorrow, Sunday we
hope to push on to Marsh Harbor where Tom has a flight booked back to West Palm
Beach on Monday morning. Today was fine with temperatures in the low 80's and
ten knots of north easterly breeze, the wind has picked up some speed as the sun
sets but if it stays more of less in this quarter we should have a good sail
tomorrow.
