We have covered one half of the distance north between the Caribbean and the Azores, now we have to make some serious distance east. We have received some new routing advice from Chris Parker at Caribbean Weather Centre, part of which reads,

"Good evening...you've sailed directly under the middle of the RIDGE,
where there's absolutely no wind.

Good news is you're VERY WELL positioned for wind to fill-in from the
W in a few days as a cut-off LO establishes near 35N/50W by Fri4...and
lingers...gradually shifting toward Azores while weakening Mon7-Wed9.

Another cut-off LO will take this one's place near 35N-40N/50W later
in the week of Mon7.

Result is you'll see a continuing moderate SW-W wind flow.

3 Tricky parts to the forecast are:
1. Make sure you stay S of both LOs, where winds are mostly from
W-components.
2. Try to minimize both the severity and persistence of squalls.
3. Try to minimize seas propagating outward from each GALE (these will
be GALEs).

Since early Tuesday we're following his advice. In a nutshell, we are heading east until possibly Sunday and then will veer off to the north for our final stretch to Horta, still some 1300 miles distant. A cold front has passed over us bringing with it several rain showers and plummeting temperature. The change caught us in the middle of drying laundry and we rushed to get it below decks and strung up across the cabin.

In anticipation of strong winds and higher waves we have transferred our spare diesel from cans into the main tank, switched propane bottles to ensure we have a fresh, full one for the next few days and the fresh water tank is now almost full. We caught a fish mid-morning, a smallish Mahi-mahi which has already provided a meal of ceviche with a couple of fillets for later.

A fresh breeze is filling in from the northwest and put us onto the opposite tack for the first time this voyage. Now it will be easier to sleep on the sofa and in the small cabin.
