It was even way before first light that we woke up and got ready to leave
east London. A slight breath of wind was moving across the harbour waters.
Perfect time to leave. I can understand why we hid in the harbour for a few days
as we peeked out the break water and made our way into the big blue , the ocean
was still in turmoil. Shorty choppy waves were all over , and made for some slow
progress. By around 8 in the morning we headed over the strongest part of the
Augulas Current , at the 200 meter contour line. Its pretty scary going over
this area as no matter how fast or strong your engines or sails are you still
get taken by the current. After around 50 miles off the current the South
Westerly wind started to kick in. A kick in it did. With this wind pushing
against the current soon the seas were heaving. Lightning and rain to add to the
mix. We were soon flying down mountainous sea. Connor started to feel sea
sick and braved out his shift. By morning the Winds were still strong and we
made some good progress. It seems the further out from the 200 meter contour
line we go , the less the current becomes. A with less current means the waves
are not as big and angry . Its times like this ( When the seas are huge and its
wet and miserable ) that i wonder why the hell am i out here , but on the same
vein , percentage wise , its only a small portion of the trip that is nasty ,
the rest is usually pretty fun. From what our weather files say we have one more
nasty front to deal with and then we should be far enough from the coast of
South Africa to not be affected by currents or cold fronts.
