After half a dozen flights in India recently, I have finally caught on to
how they work.

(1) The published departure time means nothing because if there's going to
be delay (there always is) then they send out a quick email with a "revised
schedule" and the new time becomes the official time. Presumably, the
airline then can smugly claim they are never late.

(2) Getting a boarding pass online means nothing as they will give your seat
away if you don't check in at the airport. In any case, without email,
checking in at the airport is the only way to find out when your plane is
actually scheduled to depart.

(3) Airport announcements are not made in any known language.

(4) Information displays in airports cycle through all languages with about
half a second between each.

(4) Riding on the roof is permitted.

Apart from leaving a credit card on the front desk of the hotel, I flew out
of Kolkata and got back to Mumbai this afternoon without incident was and
piped aboard ship.

The memsahib and I went out our old haunt, the Taj Mahal Palace, for a few
G&T's and samosas and watched the sunset.
