The wind has been gradually building and it is now blowing 15 to 20 and the boat is charging downwind at around 8kts. The waves have grown too and have reached nearly scary size. We are 190nm from Suwarro or Suvarov Atoll and with the present conditions it should be ok to make a quick stop there to have a look.
The atoll was only discovered by a Russian formally in the late 1800's but there is apparently buried treasure there and gold has been found. Evidence of human use prior to its discovery is apparently everywhere. Just wish I'd thought of bringing a metal detector. Tom Neale lived on the atoll for many years on his own and his only visits were from occasional cruising yachtsman who happened by. He wrote a book about it so I must get a copy. His hut is still there but unfortunately he died of cancer some years back. A park ranger lives there now. While I was writing that it occurred to me that I am now in New Zealand waters and must be getting closer to the date line. Certainly feels like home is closer. I guess thats obvious as I plan to end the trip in August so home should be feeling closer.
