The dirty Port of Lautoka

I'm going to say it like it is. The people are lovely but the rules are stupid. I should mount a campaign for mercy towards solo sailors. It is so difficult to anchor a yacht alone and to get to shore. It involves blowing up a dinghy which makes blowing up a lilo childs play. It involves scary stuff with chains and anchors while the boat is drifting in strong winds and then to top it off I had to row back to the boat in a torrential downpour.
The day started at 6am with leaving the marina. I was worried that not enough water was coming out of the exhaust. It was like an old mans, ok you got the picture. Stupidly I cast off keeping an eye on the water out of the exhaust. After an hour it stopped so I freaked. If water doesn't come out the exhaust the motor blows up. Simple. I decided sailing was a good option and while I was sailing investigated the cause of the problem. Trouble was there were lots of reefs which aren't happy places for solo sailors or any sailors for that matter. So I set the ipad alarm to tell me when I was within five minutes of a reef and set to work. First I established that the salt water inlet was clear by blowing through the hose and feeling the bubbles. Then I tacked. Then I checked the impeller and found that most of it wasn't there. Then I tacked. Luckily I had a spare so installed that and bingo, success. Problem now was that I was arriving in Lautoka to check out and had no spare impeller so before going to customs, and after anchoring, blowing up the dinghy etc. I went in  search of an impellor for a yanmar deisel in Fiji. Major mission but succeeded thanks to an internet cafe and a very tolerant taxi driver. I finally checked out and asked if ther would be a problem if I slept the night here as the reefs offshore aren't fun at night. The Fijian customs man said don't worry just leave early before the immigration guys start work. Fact is nobody checked my boat and I didn't need to come here except for the rules. It has to be the dirtiest place to anchor because there is a wood chip plant nearby which kindly drops black ash on the immaculate deck of my fine yacht. It's all too much and I just want to go for a sail. Planning to leave at 7am.
