Tahiti is geographically very similar to Maui being two ex volcanoes separated by a plain between. There is the larger northern mountain which makes Tahiti Nui and the smaller southern one being Tahiti Iti. The monster surf often seen on TV is around the coast of Tahiti Iti. The only access to this area is by boat as there are no roads down there. Naturally I am hoping to get the chance to see it, safely of course. Because of the lack of roads apparently it has become a time capsule of how Tahiti of old was and that has got my interest piqued.
Today Raoul (my new best friend) took me to Papeete where I finished up some issues regarding repairs and arranged  the hire car for tomorrow's tour. A lot don't like Papeete. I find I do. Groups of old men sit and play music and sing or have long arguments with restrained passion. Large women bustling about very importantly and gorgeous young things flirting innocently with the world. Flowers are compulsory wearing and the clothes are best described as megaphone loud. There is no volume control on a Polynesian shirt. Naturally I have to get a selection to embarrass those nearest and dearest.
Having a local guide is just great. I met the local gendarme who is an ex boxing champion and still looked like a potent man. Went down alleys and shortcuts that you wouldn't dream of going down all the while saying hello to friends of Raouls. Progress was slow but a lot of fun.
