"Jolly Harbour, Antigua - 24/25/26th February"

24th February

After a second very rolly night at anchor and despite the fact that we did not have a weather forecast, we decided to weigh anchor and head to either the island of Nevis or Antigua or if the wind direction made this unattainable we would head back to Guadeloupe and set off north from there.  We motor sailed north in the hope that once out of the lee of Montserrat we would have a true wind and decide our course.  It was a long slow slog into the swell and the wind and our progress was no more than 2 knots, we were just thinking that maybe going down the East coast of Montserrat and back to Guadeloupe would be the best idea as the wind seemed to be on our nose which ever course we turned to.  A little voice suggested that perhaps we should pull out the headsail first before deciding on our course.  To our surprise Whisper kicked up her heels and although she could not point to Antigua, she could make a slightly more north easterly course, which would allow us to tack down to Jolly Harbour once far enough north and closer to the island.  I am convinced that she knew just where she wanted to go, Noel balanced her sails and ever so gradually she came round a little bit further and bit by bit she was able to point further down the coast until four hours later, she was on a perfect course for Jolly Harbour.  Quite simply we arrived on the same tack!  It was amazing as the swell was quite high and we expected to be pushed in the other direction, but she kept her head and delivered us safely to our destination.

We have taken a mooring in the marina, it is luxury to have electricity to power the fridge continually, not to mention the use of the hot clean showers and of course that other commodity - the Internet!  The beautiful turquoise blue water beckoned to us to anchor but as we only plan to stop over night to clear immigration we thought some civilisation would be appreciated.

Life has a habit of turning up events which completely change ones plans.  This has happened to us, our plan of coming to Antigua at this time, was to check in and then travel up to the beautiful island of Barbuda for a few days, before coming back to Antigua to explore the island and meet up with some longstanding friends.  As it happens, we bumped into a friend last evening, whom we met back in St Lucia and our plans for the next few days have taken on a complete new dimension.  Please don't worry Dean, we still plan to meet up with you and Amanda - after all you will have the Wedding Cake!

Today, has been quite busy preparing for our next activity, I am not going to write about it now, but all will be revealed later, suffice to say that Whisper's Blog may be quiet for a few days!
