"Mustique - 5th December"

We had a glorious mornings sail to Mustique picking up a buoy in Britannia Bay.  We were only going to stop for lunch but decided to stay overnight.  Mustique is nicknamed Billionaires' Island, renowned for its famous and wealthy residents - Princess Margaret, Mick Jagger, Racquel Welsh, David Bowie to name a few.  After lunch we pumped up the dinghy and Mick rowed me ashore in search of a Rum n Raisin ice cream at Basil's Bar - a multi roofed wooden structure built on pillars above the beach and hanging out over the sea.  We landed at a wooden jetty and walked up to the closed small wooden Harbour Office.  A board hanging on the wall gave a list of rules to be obeyed whilst visiting the island, ie bathing costumes to be worn only on the beach; no nudists etc.  More importantly there was a list of the mooring buoy fees by boat size.  The rates were fixed for a duration of three nights (no one night stands here), the first size of yacht was 0-70 feet, as Whisper is 36 feet, that was our rate.  I was amazed to see that it was EC200, not bad for three nights, but we were only staying for one night.  Thinking that our skipper would not want to stay overnight we quickly carried on the Basil's Bar - no Rum n Raisin ice cream!  One Vanilla ice cream and a small beer (for the princely sum of £7.50) later, we returned to Whisper.  As we did not have enough day light time to go on to the island of Canouan, our next planned visit, our skipper decided to "pay up and grow good" when the Mooring Master called by.  We did try to negotiate a one night fee but he was adamant, I guess he was just doing his job and had no choice in the matter.  It is as well that we had not ventured to the Cotton Club located in another bay on the island, one really does have to be a millionaire to frequent it.  Expensive as it may have seemed to us, it is fun to say that we have visited this beautiful and famous island.
