"Day 5 At Sea - 12th November"

We are steadily progressing in the right direction averaging 125 miles in 24 hours.  The wind is behind us and the sails are goose winged, this makes a rolling motion, sometimes gentle, sometimes violent and usually just when you want to pour the tea into the cup or any other activity requiring a stable base. The contents of the cupboards have been sufficiently shaken up that retrieving something from them and returning it is quite an art.

The night skies are quiet exceptional, the sky completely filled with bright stars and planets.  Last night it reminded me of a time when we were sitting in a cave deep down in a crevasse in New Zealand.  We had entered the inky black cave and sat on some rocks, as we  waited the cave was slowly illuminated by hundreds upon hundreds of glow worms, it was quite a spectacular sight.  As we raced through the dark last night we were chased by small black clouds, which eventually caught us up, obliterating the heavens above for a short while, dampening the decks and then teasingly showing small clusters of stars until the cloud had past by and the sky was once more studded with stars again.

The seas vary immensely, we have not yet reached a point of long wide rollers, they are quite short and from varying directions, the helm often gets a surprise shower much to the amusement of the rest of us warm and dry below.  Whisper is behaving well under the conditions, gently picking up her skirts and letting the wave roll underneath her before scurrying off down the otherside of it. It is quite amazing to see these huge waves coming up behind our stern and then to see the deep drop below into the trough as the wave rolls under us.  Our other friend Windy Bill is also behaving well and working hard at keeping us on course despite the influence of the seas constantly trying to push Whisper off course.

So far so good!
