Inverness Tuesday 6th September

The days at home in Scotland have flown by with work at Gael Force being full on. However the inescapable reality of the task I have ahead of me is starting to dominate my thoughts today.

This afternoon I will head down to Capetown and hopefully by Saturday I can set sail for Gibraltar.

In my own mind I have broken the passage up into three phases – the South Atlantic where the challenges are avoiding the constant stream of depressions rolling round the southern latitudes. Then the middle section has the challenges of avoiding being locked into the Doldrums and avoiding the Atlantic hurricanes which spawn to the west of the Cape Verdes. The third phase is in the North Atlantic. By then there will be October gales and the winter will be starting to kick in in the North and I will also have to try to beat my way up against the prevailing winds as far as Gibraltar or the Canaries.

I will try to keep daily blogs going when at sea which I hope will be after Saturday of this week. I’ll keep you posted.

It has been good to receive so many well wishes from you which are appreciated.
