Born and brought up in Stornoway in the Hebrides in the mid sixties, we were always surrounded by the sea and its influence and effect on the lives of Gaels over the generations. Hearing the stories of the whalers and merchant seamen, the fishing industry, the wars – an Cogadh Mor – the heart wrenching tragedy of the Iolaire, the waves of emigrations, the Metagama and the Marloch, the Oil Industry – all must slowly permeate the bones of a Hebridean. I always heard as a youngster older people saying “Go West Young Man” – so I am.
