Wonderful sailing day! We woke up much too late, had much too much for breakfast, but had the excellent west wind as in the last couple of days. We set sail right outside the harbour and made it to Cowes in record time, in spite of the current against us. Since Cowes is something of a sailing Mecca, we thought of stopping for a quick walk and lunch. The bay looked very industrial and uninviting though, so we decided to continue to Portmouth without stopping.
Portsmouth has an extended military history, but parts of the town have been successfully reclaimed for civilian use -- there is a huge shopping mall next to the town center (with its signature building, the Spinnaker Tower) and the old town center has been converted to an upscale living area. We strolled along the shore and saw the old towers which used to guard the entrance to the port.
