Bowen (pop 18,000) was initially established in the early 1900's as an outlet for the coal industry, but as it is a small shallow harbour it was ultimately unable to compete with larger harbours along the coast.

For us it provided us with a secure anchorage outside the harbour for a couple of days, and a good family business fishing tackle shop to replace the rod broken by the landing of our first tuna!
