With the gold rush long gone, the allure of finding our own gold lives on if only a few tiny flakes. So we went into training as Josh is demonstrating at the Ross heritage gold mining experience and walk. Whole hillsides of glacial gravels ground from the mountains along the uplifted Alpine fault and washed down gain the were sluiced away to precious nuggets. So we have our few flakes that we panned but you can do this for real in the official fossicking sites as the sign shows.
A small village cemetery is testament to the hard times and dangers of the workings, included a grave of a worker from Ireland. There were quite a few who didn't make forty.
Driving south along the coastal highway, you cross frequent river beds, these are just a couple.
