Day two FH
Called Zen, one of the boats in the bay that we
know, they say there have been two boats leave. Back to the bay of whatever we
go. Anchored by 10:00, into town for a recce. The first woman we see calls us
over and starts yakking in broken English, can’t understand a thing but she
gives us each an orange and I think says she is cooking dinner for us at
6. Could be mistaken though. May have been cooking us for dinner at 6. I have
heard that Fatu Hiva was THE last place in the pacific that stopped eating the
delicacy known as long pig, or “human bean” to thee and me.
Anyway she introduces us to THE policeman, who asks
us for our passports. I say we don’t have them with us so he says tomorrow at 8.
She then shows us to her house and starts parading tapa drawings, tikki carvings
etc etc. none of them cheap but either way we have no local money and they don’t
accept anything else, so there. She is none too happy though and by the time we
leave we get the feeling that if she could get away with it long pig would be
back on the menu.
The village has 3 to 400 people, no one seems sure
but they seem to be mostly younger than 12. No sign of anyone from 18 to 30ish.
It is all laid back and extremely friendly but there is certainly an underlining
feel that they want to get something out of the encounter and it isn’t a better
understanding of our origins or culture.
We are told that tomorrow there will be a supply
ship and a tourist ship or it could be a supply tourist ship or even a tourist
supply ship, it could be one ship or it could be 3 but anyway there will be
dancing and merriment for all. No drink of course. There is no alcohol sold on
the island. There have however been signs of some very inebriated, very large,
over zealous Polynesian men wandering about.
Rounded off the day at the boat with a V&T and
getting trounced yet again at Backgammon.
