'Juno' sails below us on the start line of race two. We could have reached out and touched her!!

 

Preparing our topsail for going up.We're all looking at a 'J 'class passing to weather.

 

 The sister-ship of 'Heart's Desire' but with the schooner rig replaced and the main cabin filled in. She was much faster than us upwind.  

 

Our main competition,'Jaldevi' another, larger John Alden design.Note that they already have the topsail up and are just hauling up the fisherman, the square sail between the masts. She got through us when our mainsheet broke a hundred yards from the finish line on the second race. We thrashed her on the water and on handicap on the third race. From left to right the lower sails are; jib, staysail, foresail and main.

 

Another schooner, 'Altair' a William Fyfe and built at Farlie, but as you can see from the size of the crewmen she was a bit bigger than us; eighty feet bigger!!

 

I've no idea what you call this rig though she is a schooner.

 

The 'J' class 'Ranger' chases the biggest boat in the fleet. I think she was called 'Windrose' built 2001 

 

A little Lyle Hess pilot cutter 'Carina' 30 feet is dwarfed by 'Windrose'  There were so many of these huge yachts that I didn't learn all their names.

 

The mighty 'Velsheda' built 1936 and still the fastest. The new 'Ranger' 2005 just can't beat her, despite being a faithful copy of the original 'Ranger' which was a much newer boat than 'Velsheda'. Velsheda is 136 feet long. There are another three 'J's being built as we speak. 

 

The William Fyfe, 'Belle Aventure' 230 feet.....ish, built Farlie 1929. Winner of last years Concourse d' Elegance.
