Tobago Cays are a group of small, deserted islands
protected from the sea by Horseshoe Reef. The area is a national park and there
is a small charge of £2 per day per person on visiting yachts which goes towards
conservation.
Our anchorage at Tobago Cays just tucked in to the
south of Petit Rameau for all you Google Earthers. This is looking over to the
northwest of Petit Bateau. Union Island is in the background.
Another view of Petit Bateau.
Looking north towards Canouan. The hill in the
middle of the photo is Glossy Hill. The breaking water is the northern end of
Horse Reef, a ring of coral reef that almost encircles the Cays protecting them
from the big Atlantic rollers.
Looking north into the bay on Petit Rameau. The
piles on the beach are old Conch shells.
Looking west, this is the north east side of
Mayreau with Salt Whistle Bay behind the line of low lying land covered by palm
trees.
Buying mangos and limes from a boat boy. This is
the traditional double enders that they row way out to sea in. Note the recycled
sole of a boot as the base for the rollocks.
Fisherman returning from a day at sea. It is quite
amazing how far out into rough water they go with these small
boats.
