Atlantic Day 7 + 8
Swiftwing
Mon 3 Dec 2007 18:09
Lat/Lon at 1200GMT today: 20:04.17N
22:58.73W
Due to a technical hitch
yesterday involving salt water and the laptop, we were unable to post a
blog yesterday. Don't worry, the computer is working fine now that it has dried
out. I have decided to include both days in today's blog, rather than write two
seperate ones with different lat/lon readings, because today has been more or
less uneventful.
Fishing news first. The
Swiftwing fishing department have had no sucess with it's highly engineered,
next generation 'muppts', codenamed 'Terminator' and 'Terminator 2'. Dispite
Neil's heroic efforts and his refusal to be deterred, no matter how many
soakings he gets, we have yet to dine upon fresh tuna, opting for the tinned
variety instead. I am informed by the department that the original, small
'muppets' that came with the line are being used now. There are also
rumours of large fish swimming behind the boat, so its not like they aren't
there!
Yesterday morning, the wind
direction changed to Easterly and we were able to unroll the twin headsails or
'twizzle rig' and head directly for St. Lucia, we have been able to hold course
since then. With any luck, we are now in the trades and will be carried all the
way without a hitch - aye, we'll see. We calculated today that on our current
course and daily milage, we should make our destination in in 12-15 days. I hope
this is accurate as much longer and not only will Neil and Alan miss their
flights, but we will be down to rations of corned beef and porridge - unless, of
course, the fishing efforts bear any fruit.
We had our first sightings of
flying fish today, a couple of very small ones even landed on the deck, so had
to rescue them before they died and began to smell the place up. It's bad enough
having the forepeak refered to as the 'stinky peak'.
Tea tonight is corned beef
hash, partly for fear of ending up with nothing but corned beef by the end of
the journey, but all are looking forward to it nonetheless.
