DOUGLAS:

We left Leixos about 8 am the next morning and again motored to our next port, Figueira da Foz. We did get a bit of a sail but as usual the sun burned off any wind. We were still in transit as deadlines for getting to Madeira and the Canaries were getting close. We visited the fantastic covered market at Foz managing to buy some fantastic fruit and rather large fillet stakes for 1 Euro each. In fact all three of us were laden with bags of fresh produce at a cost of just over twelve pounds. I spoke to one of the Policia’ Maritime who was tidying up his huge police power boat for the night, I’m talking 60’ cigar boat with aircraft seats here. He told me that they always get the leftover junk from Lisbon and that this boat could only do 50 knots. All the new boats go to Lisbon! On entering any of these ports I had to careful of all the tiny fishing boats, average size 12’ which virtually block the entrances to all these harbours.
