Spend yesterday afternoon in sunshine hand-steering under spinnaker to try to gain a little speed, I also trolled a fishing line. I'm not sure that hand steering and landing a fish are compatible, perhaps fortunately I failed to find out by catching anything. The spinnaker came down at dusk and shortly afterwards the wind increased to f4; needing a reef to slow Sandpiper to 5kt to avoid crashing over waves. A new sight for me yesterday afternoon was white surface streams, couple of yards wide and 100s long. They looked like bubbles, but close up the bubbles were dense streams of tiny Portuguese man-of-war jellyfish, not yet big enough to show colours but the larger bubbles had visible sails. I don't know anything about their lifecycle but this seemed to be a massive spawning.
