I've just finished reading 'The Long Way' a book written by legendary French sailor Bernard Moitessier which recounts his voyage in the 1968 Golden Globe Race. After rounding Cape Horn and on the homeward leg he decided to carry on around the world again rather that heading back to Plymouth to finish the race. His only reason - 'to save my soul'. I'm not sure what he meant by this even after reading his book. he eventually finished after about 35,000 miles in Tahiti. The race was again staged in 2018, 50 years after the original, and required entrants to only use equipment available to the entrants in 1968, a real retro race. No GPS or satphone communications. It is again being run right now with 15 boats currently racing down the Atlantic after leaving Les Sables d'Olonne on 4th September.
