We duly rowed ashore in Patreksfjordur but found no harbour personnel around and so still couldn't fill with diesel. We bought a loaf of rather nasty mother's-shame bread and wandered around a bit.

There was this memorial on a small green somewhat outside the port, a rather peculiar place in a rather small village we thought but a reminder of the many wrecks we saw detailed on the posters in Reykjavik.

The head of thee fjord is round a right angled bend and is very sheltered so we decided head there to do some exploring ashore and then stay the night.

What we hadn’t realised was that it also turned in to a gub-gub stroll: everywhere we turned there were funghi and edible berries and James was in his element.

With the help of the River Cottage mushroom book we identified most of them, certainly many were ceps of various types including one with sinister black gills, but one, just like a cep but with gills, eluded identification – some northern type of brittle-gill we think, but although it smelt fine we decided not to eat it.

Peter then proceeded to catch yet another cod so we are now declaring a moratorium. And what do you think of this? I’ve never had to carve a mussel before!

The wind remains strong-ish from the NE, with 18ms-1 (36kts, ie just F8) expected tomorrow afternoon, so we shall lurk in the fjords for a day or two more.
