Sunday 3rd August

Awelina of Sweden
James Collier

Sunday started early; Fe was plonked on a bus to the international airpot at Keflavik shortly after 7am. James was then faced with a dilemma, to go back to bed, or do boat work (similar to house work but more cramped ). After a moments thought the latter was decided on which consisted of hoovering and a supermarket sweep, the challenge of the morning being the disposal of rubbish. Iceland does not seem to have any skips or organised disposal near the port so small quantities were placed in various bins nearer the tourist area.

The wind had got up, as forecast, and Awelina was pinned onto the pontoon when a large (80m?) work boat lost control while manoeuvring in the harbour and was within 2 or 3 meters of colliding with her. The crew applied full power and the wash strained the mooring lines and generally provided a few minutes of unease.

While James was still doing ‘boat work’ the change of crew was well under way. Fe landed back in the UK and Peter was busy packing to get a 21:30 flight out from Birmingham. Having driven from the south of France through Friday night and been to a black tie do in Tewkesbury on Saturday night his packing was slow. With a new water pump for the boat in the luggage Peter thought it best to arrive 2 hours early incase of a bag search; the water pump having all the hall-marks of a bomb comprising a heavy metal cylinder with liquid inside and wires poking out both ends. Fortunately the only hassle came form TravelEx who had run out of Icelandic Kroner.

From the window seat on the plane the gale around the south of Iceland was noticeable with white tops to all the waves and a very bumpy approach into Keflavik.

Armed with the name of the closest hotel Peter took the bus shuttle into Reykjavik changing in the centre for a smaller minibus for hotel drop offs. By the time dinner and a quick beer had happened it was 02:30: a long 3 days for Peter.
