Awelina was moved from Falmouth, Cornwall to Troon, Scotland over the Bank Holiday weekend. Hannah (Hudson) tried out her sea legs for the first time ever during a 4 day sail to move the boat north. We’d planned to get her as far as Plockton however the weather conspired against the crew and they diverted to Ireland for 20 hours. This is sailing to the weather conditions after all. We’d hope to move her further north the following weekend but other things took precedence. Instead we carried on with some necessary preparations to set up our communications network whilst away. We found two willing friends able to help out; Hanna’s dad John Hudson, and Elisabeth Burmeister now known as our ice communications team. Their task is to send out sea ice forecasts on a regular basis. Elisabeth has a 3G connection to the internet for the purpose of sending us email daily from her narrow boat. She is going to prepare files summarising the extent of the pack ice round Svalbard using reports from the Norwegian Polar Institute. As the email has to be condensed we have worked out a code for designated regions allowing us to map the ice to our current location.

John is a radio amateur and has a HF radio transmitter set up in his garden near Bedford and he will send us weather faxes via HF as well as talking with us over the airwaves. We’re very grateful to them both.
