avocet 27.12.2009 dateline noumea new guinea while
in darwin donnacha got a bad hand infection from collecting oysters a week
earlier .this went deep into the tendon spaces and needed three surgeries to
open it and drain before the antibiotics would work .this ment longer time in
port than intended so eventually we decided that derry megalie and damien would
go to thursday island if they were ready margaret and donnacha would
join which they did.the trip from darwin was not pleasent with a combination of
wind tidal currents and a sea that looked like the sink after washing a
lot of heavily used frying pans. we got to thursday island and spent four days
nice place very friendly and then left for port moresby this was a good trip of
about 55 hoursand checked into th royal papua yacht club.we stayed 10 days
before heading to alotua on the eastern end of the country it famous in its own
way as the place where the japanese were first reversed in a land battle in the
second world war.it was a skirmish with less than 2 thousand japs involved they
left six landing craft after them when the americans arrived and setup head
quarters for the coral sea, weleft alotau on the 6 dec a sunday and headed
to new guinea initally good winds thensoutherly then the wind gods decided that
we were doing to well so every time we changed it did and we nhad two days
of force nine on the nose the gribs assured us the wind was south east 15 knots
but it liedand the suppused trade winds were nowhere to be seen.we got wet
and the henri lloyd suits were needed .we arrived at night and anchored
.at dawn we realised we were in the fairway to the port.now in noumea as french
as paris good croissants etc will update later derry
