Through the Cape Cod Canal at a speed of 10knots
saw us in place our friend Jim would have loved, the gay capital of the
New England coast, Province Town. His wife Jo would have really enjoyed
sitting in the bars watching the gay couples go by, seeing the reaction on some
single guys face when some particularly camp, muscled bloke strutted
past and browsing through the many shops geared towards gay men; in one you
could fit out the whole of ' Village People' and
another called 'toys of eros' sold amongst other things,
some beads that I certainly wouldn't like round my neck particularly once
they'd been used for their intended purpose.
We spent time browsing through many art galleries
and a fabulous shoe shop where I bought some fur lined Merrill shoes - just
perfect for 80 degrees in Maine. However, the afternoons are getting
a little bit chilly now so I do get the chance to wear them. John admits
to being very jealous as he puts his worn out fleecy socks on, he's even
thinking of buying a 'his' pair but that would mean I'd have to buy him a one
way ticket to dumpsville!
We were forecast 25 knot south westerly's for two
days so we decided to make the best of the wind and do the 150nm upto
Penobscott bay in Maine in one go. 20 hours later and a few whale
sightings saw us arrive in Tenants harbour (it would have been quicker but John
would insist on slowing the boat down by reducing sail, saying that a steady
9knots in a boisterous following sea was too much for the windvane steerer and
therefore his nerves too - maybe I should have left him in Province Town with
the other puffs).
