Boxing day morning was taken up with one of the
best dives we've done so far, we took the tender right across Horseshoe reef,
through a small passage that led to the seaward side of the reef. The park
authorities had provided buoys here so we tied up the dingy and descended onto a
gorgeous life filled reef with 50m visibility. The fish life was
unbelievable and it felt like we were diving in a tropical aquarium. Chief
fish spotter (that's me) soon tracked down three species of ray included a
fantastic Eagle ray which must have had a 6 foot wingspan. As it glided
gracefully through the water we managed to swim alongside at a depth of
15m. The other two rays were a large sting ray and a giant reef ray.
We also spotted a moray eel, a huge barracuda and a cunningly disguised scorpion
fish (they blend into the coral). Duncan and Caroline snorkelled above the reef and
Duncan thought it better than any thing he'd seen on the Great Barrier reef in
Australia.
After a lunch of Christmas day leftovers,
crayfish sandwich, we set sail for Mayreau, 4 miles away, where we anchored up
next to a palm fringed beach and after a quick dip, hit the Pina Coladas at the
local beach bar.
