Northerly winds were forecast which would have made
a passage in the ocean near impossible, so we continued on the ICW until we
arrived in Charleston. We anchored here in the river and spent a few days
wandering around the delightful old part of town with it's mass of Colonial
architecture, nice eateries and small bars. However, it was soon time to
Continue our journey north towards the Chesapeake.
We stopped off briefly at Beaufort, another great
town renowned as a sailing destination. We were there on a bank holiday
weekend and the inlet channel resembled a scene that was a mixture between
''Wacky races' and the bad guy attacks on 'Waterworld' (the poor Kevin Costner
movie), with hundreds of boats, all ignoring the rules of the road and
collision regulations, they weaved in and out of each other at break neck
speeds creating a disturbed sea with massive waves (many of these boats
have 1000hp engines and at 45feet can do 35knots). The water was more
like the Colorado river in the Grand Canyon rather than the smooth
tidal inlet that is should be. The US coastguard did make a broadcast
appealing for common sense but had to sit there in their little inflatable
powerless to act.
