Day 5

When I told friends and family that I would be crossing Biscay in a yacht in October, they all thought I was mad, and I received dire warnings about heavy, rough seas and terrible weather.  How wrong they were!  We have had such good luck.  Once again we have had blue, sunny skies, the wind behind us, and a clear, warm, starry night.  The winds did pick up somewhat around Finisterre during the night, but that just meant that someone had the opportunity to attempt to break the speed record for the trip…..

……That someone was Rob, who clocked up a speed of 13.1 knots riding down a wave.  There is, however, some dispute among the boys, who are questioning whether this should really count as we were heading towards North America at the time, not Spain!

On the food front, we had our first attempt at fishing today, but it seems we were travelling too fast for the fish to take the bait.  Oh well, still plenty of time to catch that tuna for tea.  Instead we were treated to a sausage casserole, cooked by the two Jeremys, which was extremely tasty.

We also finally got rid of the last bowl of Tuesday night’s chicken curry, but not before a game of Dutch Auction for one last spoonful.  Bidding started at £1,000 and ended with Malene eating it for 20 euro.  I guess if the Danes eat rollmops, they’ll eat anything!

We have now safely crossed Biscay and have Bayona in our sights.  There has been much discussion about whether beers or showers come first.  No prizes for guessing which crew members favour which option.  The boys claim they have been able to smell beer for the past 24 hours!
