Leixoes (pronounced leshways) is the main port serving Porto, as the river Douro is not suitable for large vessels. so we were about 5 miles from Porto, but the local Metro tram service was very good taking us right into the centre of Porto.
The picturesque bridge; Ponte Dom Loius I designed by Eiffel in 1881 spans the river in the busy central part of Porto, bridging the deep valley both at the top of the valley and the bottom, it has 2 stories for road and rail.
Porto is renowned as the centre for producing port wine as the climate is ideal for starting the fermentation process for port and storing it in the caves and cellars along the banks of the river Douro. The river also provided the main transport system for the grapes and the finished product. We felt it only proper that the port cellars were investigated, including a little sampling.
