Viana da Costelo is located on the ria Lima and was founded in 1258 becoming very afluent and was raided by pirates until they built the fortress in the 16th century. The next pirates to arrive were Bill, Richard and Dick, arriving at the same time as a local medieval fayre.
The town has typical narrow streets, but plenty of modern small shops and boutiques, and a very nice restaurant where we enjoyed a fondue meal with very tender beef.
On arrival at the marina we were quickly asked to go back out again as we were a little too big for the berths, which did not agree with the pilot book, so we moored on the waiting pontoon on the river.
