Compass Cay and Wadrick Wells

Getting into Compass Cay was beautiful but not so good for the nerves!! There was plenty of water at high tide, but because the water is so clear and there was no wind (sea was like glass) you could see every piece of shell or turtle grass on the sea floor which made it quite unnerving!! Once inside we found a lovely spot to anchor and went to see the Nurse Sharks in the little Marina there. They are almost tame, although we were not tempted to stroke them funnily enough.

We then went to a deserted beach with the crew from S/Y Antares. In the shallows someone had left some carcasses of several dead Dorados, which seemed rather strange. Not to be put off, we carried on as normal, before realising that this was shark feeding ground! There was a hungry Nurse Shark (not harmful) which was minding its own business and Douglas and Alice went to have a look (from a distance). All of a sudden, Douglas grabbed Alice and ran out of the water and the rest of us realised that there was another shark in the water! It was a Black Tip Shark this time, which is dangerous, and it came right in next to us to eat the dead fish. It was incredible to be this close to the action and wonderful to watch. The speed and strength of these animals is incredible so I was glad that Douglas saw it in time and got Alice out of the water!!

A bit further North, we anchored at Wadrick Wells for the night and had a lovely evening walk up Boo Boo hill. At the summit, all of the visiting cruisers write their names on driftwood and add it to the pile. We then had homemade pizza on Arion with our Dutch Friends and had a lovely evening while the children made a thousand and one lego space ships!!

We have been monitoring a patch of dodgy looking weather which is due to come this way and have therefore decided to speed up our progress Northwards. Today we are heading to Nassau to re-fuel before heading across the Gulf Stream to Florida. It is a shame to have to miss out the Berry Islands and Bimini, however we need to stay ahead of this weather………..

As ever our plans change almost daily but will try to keep you updated. I promise some pictures as soon as we get proper internet rather than sending this via satellite phone!
