Arriving in Puerto Rico we were greeted by a local livaboard who could not have been more helpful! We had a total laundry mountain by now and although all of the children’s clothes I can hand wash as we go, sheets, pillow cases, towels etc are a different matter (not to mention using up tonnes of precious water onboard!!). So, I found out about ‘Brandy’.

I should have realised from the name that this might not be plain sailing!! Brandy was such a lovely woman, but I think she was given that name due to her penchant for the stuff. On collection of our washing she was not exactly able to stand up, and the washing was all still hanging up in the garden damp!! She was very apologetic, and lighting up another fag, started to gather in the sheets, wafting the smoke away as she went so that the washing would not smell of smoke!! The damp washing was collected, and brought back to the boat for us to hang out the next day on passage (we were leaving at 6am). Unfortunately it rained the whole of the next day and so it was not until we were near the Dom Rep that I was able to start hanging it all over the boat. On arrival in the Dom Rep, we were told that it was illegal to hang out one’s laundry………… I think this might have had a lot to do with the fact that it was mostly our smalls hanging out and after 5 months of sun bleaching they are in pretty bad shape and so the officials decided that they were not worthy of being on display!! I have to admit that our smalls probably could do with replacing… but it was only yesterday that we managed to get all of the washing dry enough to put away. We looked like a floating, mobile washing line…..! Poor Arion.
