Before finally leaving Karumba we drove the 4K out to Karumba point where there are some more caravan parks, some cafes, and a view of the sea! Lots of fishermen here. It’s why people come to Karumba, it seems. We then drove on eastwards, passing through Normanton again, where we stopped to fill up with diesel and looked at the old buildings. It seems every roadside cafe in Normanton has a fuel pump attached and they compete fiercely on price for business.

Quite a lot of roadkill as usual, but unusually we saw a large lizard which at first we thought was a small croc.

As we approached the turn-off for Undara we saw the smoke from a very large bushfire but we reached the turn-off before we got to the fire. It was quite late when we got to the lodge and we checked in for a site. It was a very nice campsite, almost like the bush campsites we’d stayed in at The Kimberley and, surprisingly, for the first time on our trip, we collected wood and lit a campfire. It was much needed as it was very cold !

When I checked our position on the GPS we were surprised to see that we were at an altitude of 750m and a glance at the map showed we were in the middle of the Great Dividing Range.
