Maine, the most north easterly state in the US, has been our objective for 18 months. Portland, the state capital was our first port of call. The City centre was behind the old wharfs & most of the buildings are in substantial red brick in contrast to further south. The Maine lobster fishing industry is said to be the biggest in the world & there was a good choice of fish restaurants on the old waterfront - we happily indulged ourselves! The downside is the whole coastline is now smothered with fishing pots with hardly room to pass between - if we don't get caught up in one soon I'll be very surprised! After a day's sunshine we experienced typical Maine weather for a couple of days - fog, rain, thunder & wind all in one. The hull rolling against the pontoon has taken out all our fenders socks! You can tell the winters are also hard by the abundance of 4 wheel drive Subaru's.
We're now heading 'Down East' as their phrase goes, into a vast archipelago of rocky islands with a tree lined shore swept by the cold Labrador current - when the sun goes in it's time for extra layers. This is an unforgiving coastline but the people as ever are lovely so all's well.
With love, Peter & Christene
